My name is Tony and I am a recovering alcoholic diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. Schizoaffective disorder could be best described as a double whammy of mental illnesses – having the combined effects of both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
I have been writing about my experiences for some time, well about 2 years, on my Facebook profile. I decided to start a blog to characterize my experiences, what I have been through, and what I struggle with on a daily basis.
I have been through it all regarding my alcoholism and schizoaffective disorder. I have been homeless for an extended period of time, during the winter, living on the street. I have had and lost jobs during the course of this disorder. At times, I have been barely able to function adhering to so-called societal norms.
I am currently back in school pursuing a second Ph.D. degree.
It has not been a easy road to travel, but it has been a worthwhile adventure. Schizoaffective disorder can take a simple life and complicate it tremendously. I have heard voices, seen things, been paranoid and have escaped from reality because of this mental illness.
It is my hope that by writing here, that I will strengthen my recovery and help someone else out in the process.
